Planetary mixer

Batch planetary mixers are used extensively in the pharmaceutical industiy for powder granulation. A typical batch size of 100 to 200 kg has a power input of 10 to 20 kW. Mixing times in these granulators are quite long (20 to 40 min).

In mixing pastry the important thing is not to cause gluten development. Any mixer can produce pastry. Small bakers tend to use planetary mixers for this. 

PVC spread-coating pastes are normally manufactured in high-speed planetary mixers that can be evacuated. It is best to add the plasticizer first, stir in the pigments or pigment pastes and only then to add the solid components in portions. In pigmenting plasticized PVC compounds, on the other hand, it is necessary to mix...

Use planetary mixer for mixing suspensions with high solid volume fraction. 

The important concept for scale-up is the principle of similarity (1-6). When scaling up any mixer/granulator (e.g., planetary mixer, high-speed mixer, pelletizing dish, etc.), the following three types of similarity need to be considered geometric, kinematic, and dynamic. Two systems are geometrically similar when the ratio of the linear dimensions of the small-scale and scaled-up system are constant. 

A third batch was prepared with formula 6, using a planetary mixer for the granulation. It was dried in a ventilated oven. 

Formulations are described in Table 5. Mixing and granulation were carried out in a planetary mixer. After drying (60°C in a ventilated oven), the granulates were sized with an oscillating granulator, blended with HPMC and lubricants and compressed in order to obtain tablets of hardness about 6 daN. 

Under SUPAC-SS, equipment within the same class and subclass are considered to have the same design and operating principle. For example, a change from a planetary mixer from manufacturer A to another planetary mixer from manufacturer B would not represent a change in design or operating principle and would be considered the same. 

In Example 2.12, the method of random balance, factors have been selected by the effects of their significance on dynamic viscosity of uncured composite rocket propellant. The screened-out factors are X3 mixing speed X5 time after addition of AP and Xg vacuum in vertical planetary mixer. Since insufficient vacuum in a mixer causes bubbles to appear in the cured propellant, the value of this factor is fixed at the most convenient one. For the other two factors a design of basic experiment has been done according to a FUFE matrix, as shown in Table 2.103, and aimed at obtaining the mathematical model of viscosity change. 

In the standard wet granulating method used to produce tablet feed in the pharmaceutical industry, sigma blade or heavy duty planetary mixers are often employed [12]. These machines may handle 220 or 440 lb (100 or 200 kg) batches and employ 7 to 10 hp (5.2 to 7.5 kW) drives to knead and...
