Pills, description

Surely Becker s description applies to all sorts of commitments. Here, the desperation that first leads people into a medical culture with its drug treatments and corresponding explanations for their difficulties is the beginning of a process of commitment that has far more wide-ranging implications than people can possibly see at the moment when they swallow the first pill prescribed for them. 

The chemical agents used by those intent on rape are CHB, short for gamma-hydroxybutyric acid,321 which is a powerful muscle relaxant, ketamine,331 which is used as an anaesthetic, and flunitrazepam,341 which is better known by its trade name Rohypnol and is a powerful antidepressant. They have a variety of street names, such as liquid X, liquid E, and cherry meth for CHB, kit-kat and special K for ketamine, while Rohypnol pills are referred to as roofies, roachies, rope, and roche351 as well as more descriptive names such as circles, forget me pills, and lunch money. These three chemicals will cause a person to become dizzy and then completely unconscious, so much so that when they finally come round many hours later they may find it impossible to recall anything that has happened to them. This amnesia seems to be a permanent loss of memory although some of the victims have flashbacks in the days following the rape. 

The pesticide pills intended for spiking RM08 were provided by IRMM through the producer Institute Pasteur de Lille (IPL, France) which developed and patented this new technology (WARP project, 2002-2004). Detailed description of the preparation of the materials is given in the following sections. The unsatisfactory nature of tranquillizer as a descriptive term is underlined by the large number of synonyms that have been coined. These include, among others, ataractic, antiphobic, pacific calmative and peace pill. None seems to have much to recommend it and, so far as it is necessary to refer to these drugs as a group, the term tranqmllizer is at least hallowed by use.

Overall, the theories described in the textbooks on the strength of materials are primarily oriented toward the description of isotropic materials. At the same time, numerous real objects, such as paper, plywood, particle board, fabrics, and bone and muscle tissue require that specific approaches be utilized. One specific example of a customized approach is discussed in Chapter 7, where we address the determination of the strength of catalysts made in the form of granules, pills, marbles, or rods.
