Species That Produce Pigments in Response to Ozone. Ozone causes pigment changes in many plant species. Chlorophyll degradation occurs and chlorosis results. In one plant, Rumex crispus L., chlorophyll concentrations did not decrease but anthocyanin synthesis was increased after exposure to ozone ( ).

Figure 16 shows the spectra obtained for two other pigments— green earth and Prussian blue. In the former case there are actually two spectra, one of which consists of a widely split doublet typical of iron (II) compounds. Heating this pigment changes it to a brownish-red and removes the ferrous doublet. 

The use of zinc yields greenish yellow pigments due to the lower lattice constants mercury and selenium lead to expansion of the lattice. With an increasing content of selenium, or especially mercury, the shades of the pigments change to orange, red, and ultimately to deep red (bordeaux). The brilliant colors of cadmium pigments are primarily due to their almost ideal reflectance curves with a steep ascent (Fig. 28). 

Increased pigmentation of areas exposed to sunlight, as well as photosensitivity, has been incidentally observed in some users, and is probably analogous to the pigment changes that can occur in pregnancy.

Fish, reptiles, and amphibians are sometimes prepared as whole-body taxidermy mounts, but in collections they are most often preserved in 70% ethanol and water. Dried mounts prepared for display are often painted, since most of the natural pigments change or disappear when the animal dies. Mounted fish, particularly large ones, are often produced as a combination of natural and artificial parts. Large dorsal fins, such as those on sailfish and marlin, are often damaged and are recreated in wax or resin (older mounts) or fiberglass, masonite, or thick cardboard. 

Anthocyanins undergo reversible structural transformations with change in pH. The color is most intense at low pH, and in particular, isolated pigments change toward colorlessness when the pH passes 4.5 (Bridle and Timberlake, 1997). At...
