One possible exception to the parallel between the impact of transient insomnia and the impact of partial sleep deprivation may be stress-related transient insomnia. One could hypothesize that an individual under extreme stress (e.g., a death of a loved one) might experience a pronounced physiological stress response during the day, as well as at night, which might mitigate at least some of the impact of sleep disruption. However, for most transient insomnias, the parallel with sleep deprivation research would appear to be quite appropriate.

Morphological plasticity and cellular acclimation When plants are exposed to stress as a consequence of resource depletion or climatic fluctuation, many different responses are possible depending upon the species and the nature and severity of the stress. However, as Bradshaw (1965) recognised, stress responses can be classified into two basic types, one of which is morphological and the other physiological. One of the major uses of plant strategy theory is to provide a basis for predicting which of the two mechanisms is likely to be operative in particular species, populations and situations. 

The endogenous opioids are another family of peptides involved in different physiological processes including pain regulation, respiratory control, stress responses, appetite, thermoregulation, and humoral and cellular immune function (Bodnar RJ., 2008). It is established that nicotine is a sympathomimetic agent and is expected to enhance physiologic and biochemical stress responses however, smokers reports do not comply with this explanation.
