Physiological responses, rats

Several lines of evidence obtained from the AOS of mice and rats support the contention that the AOS displays a sexually distinct morphology at cellular and sub-cellular levels, and in associated physiological responses (Simerly, 1990).

Physiological Responses. The various physiological responses measured in rats at the end of the 5-month feeding period are summarized in Table II. These responses were obtained on diets which were complete in all required nutrients except protein and calcium. Protein was provided at a marginal (10%) or excessive (30%) level while calcium was provided at a submarginal level. These levels represent patterns of intake typical of the American population.

Emotional distress—including anxiety, depressed mood, and irritability—is a pervasive feature of cannabis withdrawal in human subjects (Budney et al., 2003, 2004 Vandrey et al., 2005, 2008). Likewise, pharmacologically induced cannabi-noid withdrawal in rats is associated with marked anxiety-related behavioral and physiological responses, as well as with activation of CRF-mediated transmission in the limbic system (Rodriguez de Fonseca et al., 1997).

Concentrations of acrolein between 22 and 249 ppm for 10 minutes induced a dose-related decrease in substance P and calcitonin gene-related peptide in nerve terminals innervating the trachea of rats (Springall et al. 1990). No change was seen in total nerve distribution and number or in vasoactive intestinal peptide. Springall et al. (1990) indicate that acrolein may induced release of peptides that could play a role in the physiological response to irritants. 

This chapter will review and contrast platelet physiology of various animal qrecies. Additionally, where it contributes to understanding physiologic responses of platelets, platelet function defects will be discussed. Specific species discussed include horse, cow, sheep, goat, dog, cat, pig, rabbit, rat, mouse, Guinea pig, and bird.
