Polaroid s film product technology was initially developed and manufactured by Kodak until Kodak decided it needed a comparable product and this required the invention of a different type of development chemistry. In Kodak s PR 10 Instant Colour films a B and W developer was used and its oxidised form, created by silver development, oxidised an immobile molecule called a redox dye releaser, which then released a mobile dye [35]. Where development occurred dye was released to a receiving layer and this required new positive working emulsions, described in Sect. 11.2.4. The arrival of digital photography provided an alternative to the gratification of instant photography without the limitations and expense of instant films so they have all but disappeared. 

Nickel chloride (1 mL, 8% solntion) may be added to the DAB solution. Without nickel chloride, the reaction prodnct is brown. Nickel chloride produces a black reaction prodnct that may be preferable for black and white photography of stained slides.

In point of fact, it is neither to the light nor to tlio heat of the solar rays that one is indebted for tho beautiful results of photography, but to another mysterious power, a principle existing in combination with the light and heat of the sun, to which haB been applied the appropriate name of actinism—a torm derived from the Greek word for a sunbeam, and signifying merely the influence of the sun s rays, or ray-pou>er, without involving the assumption of any theory on the subject. 

The unit-cell dimensions determine the reciprocal-lattice dimensions, which in turn tell us where we must look for the data. Methods like oscillation photography require that we know precisely which reflections will fall completely and partially within a given oscillation angle so that we can collect as many reflections as possible without overlap. So we need the unit-cell dimensions in order to devise a strategy of data collection that will give us as many identifiable (by index), measurable reflections as possible. 

Photography. No discussion of the uses of silver and its compounds could be complete without reference to photographic processes. That photography is responsible for the utilization of a considerable fraction of the annual production of silver is shown by the fact that the Eastman Kodak Company alone uses more than 300,000 lb of silver annually.
