An optical detector with appropriate electronics and readout. Photomultiplier tubes supply good sensitivity for wavelengths in the visible range, and Ge, Si, or other photodiodes can be used in the near infrared range. Multichannel detectors like CCD or photodiode arrays can reduce measurement times, and a streak camera or nonlinear optical techniques can be used to record ps or sub-ps transients. [Pg.383]

A variety of colors, such as green, amber, and red (and infrared), can be obtained with different semiconductor materials without the need for a filter (see Ch. 13, Table 13.4). A LED (or photodiode) device may consist of multiple diodes in an array operating in the reverse-bias mode. Patterns of light showing symbols, letters, or numbers can thus be produced with different colors obtained by doping the semiconductor material by CVD or ion implantation. [Pg.390]

All S FG spectra were obtained by averaging 50 400 pulses per data point and were normalized against the intensity of the visible and infrared inputs, which were simultaneously monitored by a power meter (Oriel instruments. Model 70833 and 70811) and Si photodiode, respectively. [Pg.78]

Photomultiplier tubes or photodiodes (light sensors) are used as detectors in UV-VIS spectrophotometers, while thermcouples (heat sensors) are used as detectors for infrared (IR) spectrometry. This is the reason UV-VIS instruments are called spectrophotometers while IR instrument are called spectrometers. [Pg.212]

A photodetector with a suitable spectral response for the detection of the fluorescence emission. As mentioned above, the fluorescence of most Cr3+-activated materials consists of either the red R-lines or a broadband infrared emission with the peak wavelengths ranging from -750 to 1000 nm, or both emissions. Thus, the widely available, compact and inexpensive silicon PIN photodiodes are the most suitable photodetectors for these applications. In some particular circumstances, where high speed and high sensitivity of detection are required, a silicon-based avalanche diode could be the best alternative to the PIN photodiode, at small price premium ... [Pg.356]

A photodiode array or charge coupled device can measure an entire spectrum at once. The spectrum is spread into its component wavelengths, and each wavelength is directed onto one detector element. For the infrared region, the most important method for observing the entire spectrum at once is Fourier transform spectroscopy. [Pg.442]

A photomultiplier tube is a sensitive detector of visible and ultraviolet radiation photons cause electrons to be ejected from a metallic cathode. The signal is amplified at each successive dynode on which the photoelectrons impinge. Photodiode arrays and charge coupled devices are solid-state detectors in which photons create electrons and holes in semiconductor materials. Coupled to a polychromator, these devices can record all wavelengths of a spectrum simultaneously, with resolution limited by the number and spacing of detector elements. Common infrared detectors include thermocouples, ferroelectric materials, and photoconductive and photovoltaic devices. [Pg.449]

A backside illuminated imager is presented in JP-A-63273365. The amount of cross-talk between adjacent photodiodes, which have been separated by grooves, is reduced by forming an infrared blocking film in the groove regions. [Pg.130]
