Reactivity toward White Phosphorus, Elemental Sulfur, and Tellurium... 

Elemental sulfur is a yellow solid, in which eight snlfnr atoms form a crown-shaped ring Ss. Unlike elemental white phosphorus, elemental snlfnr has very low toxicity. Years ago, people in the United States took a preparation of snlfnr and molasses as a spring tonic. Taken orally, sulfur has a mild laxative effect. Beyond that, it is not clear to me what favorable effects this tonic may have had, if any. There is a lot of snlfnr aronnd. When taken in all its forms, it accounts for nearly 2% of the weight of the crnst of the Earth. 

LiP(SiMe3)2 2THF (white crystals) is outstandingly suitable for the transfer of the P(SiMe3>2 group, and hence for the preparation of various phosphorus-element compounds (13).

Apart from equifinality, another important property of these operator networks is the periodic character of the changes in the properties and nature of the clusters constituting them. The second difference between 0=PF3 and PF is the existence of a formal P=0 double bond (really a P —0 bond subject to hyperconjugation) compared to two P—F single bonds. We will find out in Chap. 5 that a phosphorus element double bond results in a significant downlield shift of the phosphorus resonance. That should not surprise us. We know that a. r-donor interaction from a subsituent results in a significant upheld shift. By the same argument, a double bond to a more electronegative element should result in a signihcant downheld shift, as observed. 

Interest has again continued in studies of the generation and reactivity of phosphinidene species (RP ), phosphorus analogues of carbenes, and this area has been reviewed. A review has also appeared of the use of terminal phosphinidene complexes in the formation of phosphorus-element bonds. Further studies of phosphanylidene-a -phosphoranes, RP = PR3, (regarded as phosphine-complexed phosphinidenes, i.e., ArP -PRs), have shown that the species Me3P=PAr (Ar = Mes or 2,6-Mes2C6H3) are good vehicles for the delivery of the terminal phosphinidene moiety ArP to zirconium and vanadium sites. A comparison of the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images between the Al O - and AlPO -coated LiCoO particles is shown in Fig. 10.6. In both cases, the aluminum or phosphorus elements are distributed over the LiCoO surfaces.
