Phosphorus budgets

N (Chen and Huang, 1995 Chen, 1996). Rivers play a relatively insignificant role in sustaining high productivity in either the ECS or the SCS (Chen and Wang, 1999). The net P deposition in the sediment alone is greater than the riverine input. Supplies from the Sulu Sea and from upwelling provide the P needed for new production.
