Alchemy was both a textual and a practical tradition, and an alchemist might have intended to use the philosophers stone to transmute base metals into... [Pg.173]

Hermetic emblems thus bear within them seeds of being that can tinge and transform our innermost essence. When we are able to absorb them in our lower vehicles through such meditative work, like drops of quintessence they subtly transmute our souls and make us glow with inner spiritual life. The wise adepts of the hermetic tradition have left to us their most precious treasure, their tincture and philosophers stone, revealed and yet still hidden from us until we resurrect them within our being through inner work. [Pg.16]

This impure sulphur causes all the difference of the imperfect metals. Therefore the malady of the metals is only accidental then, there is a remedy to cure them, and this remedy is the Philosophical Powder, or Philosophical Stone, called for this reason, Powder of Projection. To use it for the metals, enclose it in a little wax, in proportion to the quantity of metal to be transmuted, and throw it on the mercury placed in a crucible on the fire, when the mercury is at the point of smoking. It is necessary that the other metals be melted and purified. Leave the crucible on the fire until after the detonation, and then draw it out, or let it cool in the fire. [Pg.99]

It is customary to speak of the Mercurial substance of the Stone as the "wife," and of the other substance, the transmutive agent, as the "husband." These, they say, are shut up together in a sealed prison, and after losing their bodies, their spirits float above, being afterwards reunited in one body again, which is the true exalted hermaphrodite, the Powder of Projection, the perfected "Philosophers Stone."... [Pg.14]

Hide a little gold or silver up your sleeve, or conceal it in a hollow rod sealed with wax that melts on warming. Then introduce the gold or silver into a crucible when the victim-to-be is not looking, and tell him that the metal was produced by multiplication. Once he is persuaded that he has seen multiplication at work, he will readily come forward with his own gold or silver, for further multiplication or transmutation. Then take the money and run. By such tricks, the canon conned his victims into supporting his alchemical endeavors. But even in the case of such a cheat, it is important to recognize that he used fraud to finance earnest attempts to discover the philosophers stone. [Pg.9]

When Robert Boyle began his work, alchemy was alive and well. It was widely although far from universally used in medicine. The search for the philosophers stone was still taken seriously by leading natural philosophers, and many kings and princes were keen to have their own alchemists. Corpuscularianism was also alive and well, and Boyle was able to combine the latest brand of corpuscularianism with alchemy, to powerful effect. He did not accept Paracelsus s element theory, nor was he keen on Van Helmont s and he was not much impressed by the way in which seventeenth-century iatrochemists had added phlegm and earth to Paracelsus s tria prima. But he did believe that transmutation was possible and that the alchemical production of gold by multiplica-... [Pg.11]

Boyle accepted the possibility of transmutation, and he distinguished between transmutation performed with the philosophers stone and other modes of transmutation. The philosophers stone could transmute any metal into... [Pg.17]

HERMETICS — The Art or Science of the Hermetic Philosophers. Hermetic Physics are a part of this science which regards all beings of the sublunary world as formed from three principles — Salt, Sulphur, and Mercury, while it ascribes all maladies to a want of proper equilibrium in their action. The second object of the Art is to compose what is called the Elixir at the White or at the Red, which they also term Powder of Projection and Philosophical Stone. It is also claimed that by means of the Elixir at the White, it is possible to transmute metals into Silver, and by means of the Elixir at the Red into Gold. [Pg.326]
