Toluene demand in 1996 increased because of the new Amoco and Mobil (Chalmette) disproportionation plants as well as other capacity changes at Coastal (Eagle Point), Phillips (Sweeney), Gulf Chemicals (Arochem plant, Puerto Rico), Koch, and Texaco (Huntsman, Port Arthur). Dewitt (71) forecasts continued increase for this appHcation at the rate of about 14% between 1995 and the year 2000. These will have a significant effect on toluene price and availabiUty in the later 1990s. On the other hand, toluene demand for gasoline blending is expected to decline by about 283 million Hters by 1997-1998.

Commercial plants Lyondell Petrochemical Co., Channelview, Texas, uses both the OCT technology and ethylene dimerization technology. Two other plants have used related technology including a Phillips 66 Co. plant at Pasadena, Texas. A 690-million lb/yr unit is under construction for BASF Fina Petrochemicals in Port Arthur, Texas.

The large producers of cyclohexane in the United States are Chevron Phillips at Port Arthur, TX, Borger, TX, and Sweeny, TX Huntsman at Port Arthur, TX and ExxonMobil at Beaumont, TX. The total US productive capacity is over 550 miiiion gaiions annually. 

In the United States, the largest producer of ethylene is Equistar Chemicai with plants in Texas, Iowa, Louisiana, and Illinois. ExxonMobii is the second largest with production units at Baytown, Texas Beaumont, Texas Houston, Texas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Dow Chemical is the number three producer with plants at Freeport, Texas Plaquemine, Louisiana and Taft, Louisiana. Chevron Phillips Chemical is the fourth largest in the United States with piants in Baytown, Port Arthur, and Sweeny, Texas. The number five US producer is Sheii Chemicai at Deer Park, Texas, and Norco, Louisiana. In 2010, there were a total of 16 producing firms in the United States generating a total of 64 billion pounds of ethylene annually.
