This does not occur in the case of catalyst and reactants here described. With Bronsted-type catalysis, the reaction between the benzoyl cation, Ph-C" =0, and the hydroxy group in phenol is quicker than the electrophilic substitution in the ring. This hypothesis has been also confirmed by running the reaction between anisole and benzoic acid in this case the prevailing products were (4-methoxy)phenylmethanone (the product of para-C-benzoylation) and methylbenzoate (obtained by esterification between anisole and benzoic acid, with the co-production of phenol), with minor amounts of phenylbenzoate, phenol, 2-methylphenol and 4-methylphenol. Therefore, when the 0 atom is not available for the esterification due to the presence of the substituent, the direct C-acylation becomes the more favored reaction. [Pg.86]

Besides of (2,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-phenylmethanone, many other compounds with suitable UV-absorbing groups can be used. These compounds are listed in Table 1.8. The oligomeric UV-absorber is mixed with low density poly(ethylene) in a typical formulation, with an amount of 0.8% by weight. [Pg.25]

A convenient four-step synthesis of 2-amino-3-pyridinyl, 3-amino-4-pyridinyl, and 4-amino-3-pyridinyl phenylmethanones 250 begins with the three isomeric N-pivaloyl pyridines 247 and involves the intermediate carbinols 248 (Scheme 75) (89JHC105). [Pg.233]

Borowicz et al. [9] have studied a series of 4/-substituted-N-phenylpheno-thiazine derivatives, including 4-phenothiazin-10-yl-anisole (APS), N-phenyl-phenothiazine (PPS), (4-phenothiazin- 10-yl-phenyl)-phenylmethanone (PBS), l-(4-phenothiazin-10-yl-phenyl)-ethanone (PAS) and 4-phenothiazin- 10-yl-benzonitrile (PCS) (Fig. 3). The three latter compounds are characterized by the occurrence of an acceptor-donor (A-D) system in which the benzophe-none, acetophenone or benzonitrile group plays an electron-acceptor role, whereas the phenothiazine moiety is acting as an electron donor through a single bond at the N-position. In the two former N-phenylphenothiazine derivatives (APS and PPS), no A-D system was present. As expected, these... [Pg.162]
