The sensitivity of the luminescence IP s in the systems employed here decreases with increasing x-ray energy more strongly than in the case of x-ray film. Therefore, this phenomenon must be compensated by using thicker lead front and back screens. The specific contrast c,p [1,3] is an appropriate parameter for a comparison between IP s and film, since it may be measured independently of the spatial resolution. Since the absorption coefficient p remains roughly constant for constant tube voltage and the same material, it suffices to measure and compare the scatter ratio k. Fig. 2 shows k as a function of the front and back screen thickness for the IP s for 400 keV and different wall thicknesses. The corresponding measured scatter ratios for x-ray films with 0,1 mm front and back screens of lead are likewise shown. The equivalent value for the front and back screen thicknesses is found from the intersection of the curves for the IP s and the film value. [Pg.470]

If a surface, typically a metal surface, is irradiated with a probe beam of photons, electrons, or ions (usually positive ions), one generally finds that photons, electrons, and ions are produced in various combinations. A particular method consists of using a particular type of probe beam and detecting a particular type of produced species. The method becomes a spectroscopic one if the intensity or efficiency of the phenomenon is studied as a function of the energy of the produced species at constant probe beam energy, or vice versa. Quite a few combinations are possible, as is evident from the listing in Table VIII-1, and only a few are considered here. [Pg.306]

A few studies have found potential surfaces with a stable minimum at the transition point, with two very small barriers then going toward the reactants and products. This phenomenon is referred to as Lake Eyring Henry Eyring, one of the inventors of transition state theory, suggested that such a situation, analogous to a lake in a mountain cleft, could occur. In a study by Schlegel and coworkers, it was determined that this energy minimum can occur as an artifact of the MP2 wave function. This was found to be a mathematical quirk of the MP2 wave function, and to a lesser extent MP3, that does not correspond to reality. The same effect was not observed for MP4 or any other levels of theory. [Pg.151]

In order for a soHd to bum it must be volatilized, because combustion is almost exclusively a gas-phase phenomenon. In the case of a polymer, this means that decomposition must occur. The decomposition begins in the soHd phase and may continue in the Hquid (melt) and gas phases. Decomposition produces low molecular weight chemical compounds that eventually enter the gas phase. Heat from combustion causes further decomposition and volatilization and, therefore, further combustion. Thus the burning of a soHd is like a chain reaction. For a compound to function as a flame retardant it must intermpt this cycle in some way. There are several mechanistic descriptions by which flame retardants modify flammabiUty. Each flame retardant actually functions by a combination of mechanisms. For example, metal hydroxides such as Al(OH)2 decompose endothermically (thermal quenching) to give water (inert gas dilution). In addition, in cases where up to 60 wt % of Al(OH)2 may be used, such as in polyolefins, the physical dilution effect cannot be ignored. [Pg.465]

Relaxation is an important example of a creep phenomenon encountered in practice. Bolts, studs, flanges, and springs of all kinds are subject to relaxation when used at high temperatures. These members are loaded to a stress that must be maintained for proper functioning. If relaxation occurs, the stress decreases. Thus bolts can become loose so that bolted joints develop leaks after operation at elevated temperatures. [Pg.112]

The rate (kinetics) and the completeness (fraction dissolved) of oxide fuel dissolution is an inverse function of fuel bum-up (16—18). This phenomenon becomes a significant concern in the dissolution of high bum-up MO fuels (19). The insoluble soHds are removed from the dissolver solution by either filtration or centrifugation prior to solvent extraction. Both financial considerations and the need for safeguards make accounting for the fissile content of the insoluble soHds an important challenge for the commercial reprocessor. If hydrofluoric acid is required to assist in the dissolution, the excess fluoride ion must be complexed with aluminum nitrate to minimize corrosion to the stainless steel used throughout the facility. Also, uranium fluoride complexes are inextractable and formation of them needs to be prevented. [Pg.204]

This tendency can be a problem wherever animals, including humans, especially kifants and children, receive an kiadequate amount of sunshine. The latter phenomenon became prevalent with the advent of the kidustrial revolution, and efforts to cute rickets resulted ki the development of commercial sources of vitamin D for supplementation of the diet of Hvestock, pets, and humans. [Pg.124]
