Phenols and Their Derivatives

Phenol (carbolic acid) is a colorless to ale pink crystalline material with a characteristic mcdici-ulodor. It is soluble tu the extent of I pan to IS pans tuicr. very soluble in alcohol, and soluble in methanol and silol (phenyl. salicylate). [Pg.221]

Cresot, NF. Cre.sol is actually a mixture of three isomeric methylphcnols  [Pg.222]

The mixture occurs as a yellow to brownish-yellow liquid that has a characteristic odor of creosote. Cresol is obtained from coal tar or petroleum by alkaline extraction into aqueous medium, acidifleation, and fractional distillation. The mixture is an inexpensive antiseptic and disinfectant. It possesses a phenol coefficient of 2.. . Cresol is sparingly soluble in water, although alcohols and other organic solvents will. solubili/e it. The drawback to its use as an antiseptic is its unpleasant txlor. [Pg.222]

Chlorocresol, NF. -f-Chloro-.l-methylphcnol occurs as colorless crystals. Chlorocresol is only slightly soluble in water. At the low concentration that can be achieved in aqueous media the compound is only useful as a preservative. [Pg.222]

The group of noninnocent ligands is continuously growing and comprises dithiolates, diimines, quinones, phenolates, and their derivatives with all combinations of coordinating N, O, and S atoms, and many others. Some examples are found in Sect. 8.2. [Pg.550]

The reagent is particularly suitable for the determination of amines and phenols and their derivatives, and also for unsaturated compounds. Temperature has a marked effect on the rate and on the extent of bromi-nation. It is necessary to know or to determine what bromo compound is being formed. [Pg.501]

Ag20. Protection of the basic nitrogen as an amide moiety was also found to decrease the side reactions involving oxidation at nitrogen. By combining these various tactics, it is now possible to obtain good yields of compounds related to 306 via oxidative cyclizations of phenols and their derivatives. [Pg.311]

In spite of the immense quantity of literature available on alkyl-substituted phenols including their syntheses, chemical and physical properties, their great importance as intermediates in the synthesis of natural products, as well as their many applications in science or industry, much less is known about aryl-substituted phenols and their derivatives. Even in recent comprehensive reviews on phenols1,2) no chapter specifically concerning arylated phenols has been included. What may be the reasons for this strange gap ... [Pg.101]
