Discussion. Silver can be extracted from a nearly neutral aqueous solution into nitrobenzene as a blue ternary ion association complex formed between silver(I) ions, 1,10-phenanthroline and bromopyrogallol red. The method is highly selective in the presence of EDTA, bromide and mercury(II) ions as masking agents and only thiosulphate appears to interfere.8... [Pg.182]

Numerous experimental systems verified the theory of surface electrode reactions. Reductions of methylene blue [92], azobenzene [79, 82] alizarine red S [93], probucol [94], molybdenum(V)-fulvic acid complex [95], molybdeniun(VI)-1,10 phenanthroline-fulvic acid complex [96], indigo [97], and reduction of vana-dium(V) [98] at a mercury electrode are some of the examples for surface electrode... [Pg.67]

SDS), and indeed SDS-catalysis of Hg " -catalyzed replacement of cyanides in [Fe(C1 6]" 1 1,10-phenanthroline has been proposed as an analytical method for the determination of mercury. ... [Pg.422]

In the presence of 1,10-phenanthroline, Fe2+ forms a complex which has a broad absorption band centred at 510 nm. The quantum yield of the reaction is wavelength dependent, but the useful wavelength range is quite wide. The quantum yields are 1.25 at 254 nm, 1.21 at 365 nm and 1.01 at 436 nm (these being important emission lines of mercury arcs). [Pg.255]

A trial was made to take a look at the valence of iron in adrenodoxin (29) using 3 moles of p-chloromercuribenzoate (PCMB) per gram atom of iron (less than saturated level of PCMB), all of the iron could be extracted by 5% trichloroacetic acid solution as ferric iron, which produces a ferrous-o-phenanthroline complex only by the addition of ascorbate as reductant. In the absence of the mercurial, some 50% or more of the iron atoms in the protein can be removed in the ferrous state. This result indicates that the acid extraction causes intramolecular reduction of the protein-bound iron. As shown in Fig. 10, 5.7 M urea as a protein denaturant can slowly bleach the visible absorption under aerobic conditions. About 10% of the residual absorption remains at 414 mp after the reaction is completed. In the presence of both urea and o-phenanthroline, all of the iron present in adrenodoxin reacts with o-phenanthroline to produce the ferrous complex under aerobic conditions. Similar experiments under anaerobic conditions reveal that the... [Pg.22]

These polyfluoroaryl groups enhance the acceptor properties of mercury and neutral 1 1 coordination complexes can be isolated with bipyridyl, 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphi-no)ethane, 1,10-phenanthroline, and so on [45, 63]. [Pg.375]

The helical disposition of the aromatic ligands in the tris complexes confers optical rotatory strength on the ligand transitions [372, 495). This fact may be used to arrive at the absolute configuration of the complex, e.g., (-l-)Ru(phen) + has been shown to exist as a left-handed helix [495). The optical rotatory dispersion of phenanthroline complexes of zinc, cadmium, and mercury has also been studied [419). [Pg.163]

Mercury(II) forms with 1,10-phenanthroline a cationic complex which gives ion-associates with the acid dyes Rose Bengal B [57] and eosin [58] the associates have also been used for determining mercury in aqueous medium. [Pg.266]

A number of transition metals can be determined conveniently if their cations undergo a definite change of oxidation state see Oxidation Number) on titration with a standard solution of potassium permanganate, potassium dichromate, cerium(IV) sulfate, or ammonium hexanitratocerate(IV). Several visual indicators have been proposed, including diphenylamine and its derivatives, xylene cyanole FF, and especially A-phenylanthranilic acid and tris(l,10-phenanthroline)iron(II) sulfate ( ferroin ). Solutions of have been used in the determination of iron, copper, titanium, vanadium, molybdenum, tungsten, mercury, gold, silver, and bismuth, and standard solutions of and Sn F U, and and Mo have also... [Pg.202]

The effect of silver salts, copper acetate and mercury acetate as an additive was studied in the palladium-catalyzed carbonylation of nitrobenzene [17]. The combination of palladium acetate, sliver fluoride, 1,10-phenanthroline and p-toluen-sulfonic acid were found to be highly active and selective yielding nitrobenzene conversion up to 96 %. Copper acetate and mercury acetate are also effective as additives and gave good results. A-phenylcarbamate was produced in the presence of alcohol. [Pg.169]
