PERT chart

Design and development plans need to identify the activities to be performed, who will perform them, and when they should commence and be complete. One good technique is to use a network chart (often called a PERT chart), which links all the activities together. Alternatively a bar chart may be adequate. In addition there does need to be some narrative, as charts rarely convey everything required.

PERT (Performance Evaluation and Review Technique) charts primarily show how the different tasks are connected by presenting these as a network of boxes (activities) linked with lines. Due to a lack of a common time scale, start and finish dates have to be added to each individual task box. Complex PERT charts are difficult to survey and are less suitable for presentation purposes of the entire project. However, they are commonly used during the establishment of a project plan and to illustrate dependencies within a selected part of the project, because they expose the logic of a project. 

For very complex projects it is necessary to assign the dependency to each individual task already while each task is described in order not to overlook essential task links.This is best done using PERT charts or an arrow model.

PERT (Performance Evaluation Review, and Tracking) and CPM (Critical Path Method) charts (flowcharts) show the flow, connectivity, and interdependency of project tasks, activities, and goals. A PERT chart (Figure 27.9) depicts the activities in the order that they will need to be carried out, either in series or in parallel. These charts also identify which activities need to be completed (or initiated) before the next activity, which is dependent on it, can be initiated.

The creation of a master plan permits the development of a logical overview of the validation effort. It lays out in a logical sequence the activities or key elements or both to be performed in accordance with the approximate time schedule in a Gantt or PERT chart format. The master plan establishes the critical path through the chart against which progress can be monitored. 

Diagrams like Gantt and PERT charts (e.g., see [777]) are tools for project management and resource allocation. Consequently, their focus is on the representation of resources and roles. 

Project management software This is software that is receptive to presentation team input over time and that has capabilities to organize and structure the tasks associated with the group, often in the form of a Gantt chart. This is very specialized software and would be potentially useful for a team interested primarily in obtaining typical project management results in terms of PERT charts and the like.
