Permanent water cover

Jupiter and Uranus are outer planets composed mainly of gases. Jupiter s atmosphere contains reddish-brown clouds of ammonia. Uranus has an atmosphere made up mainly of hydrogen and helium with clouds of water vapor. This combination looks greenish to an outside observer. In addition, Mars has an atmosphere that is 95% carbon dioxide, and Venus has a permanent cloud cover of sulfur dioxide that appears pale yellow to an observer. Mercury has no permanent atmosphere. Saturn has 1 km thick dust and ice rings that orbit the planet. The eight planets in our solar system are diverse, each having different chemical compositions within and surrounding the planets. Out Earth is by far the friendliest planet for human existence. [Pg.75]

Measurements of 14C have rarely been used as tracers to study sources of individual DOC fractions. Aiken et al. (1996) used 14C measurements of fulvic acid in a permanently ice-covered closed basin lake in Antarctica to investigate sources of DOC in the lake. Sampling along a depth profile in the lake showed that the fraction of modern carbon decreased with depth and confirmed that the high concentrations of fulvic acid in the bottom waters represented an old source, with an age of around 3000 years, which was diffusing into the upper water column (Fig. 3). [Pg.77]

In the upper water column, the fulvic acids have a modern signal. This young fulvic acid derives from perennial algal mats in glacial meltwater streams. At depth, the fulvic acids are quite old (about 3000 years) and are possibly derived from organic material in sediments. The ratio of S/C increases with depth as conditions in the water column become anoxic. [Pg.78]

Solar irradiance. The southern position of the region determines the supply of a great amount of solar irradiance. The low albedo of the underlying water surface (4-5% under calm weather at a sun height of h- 60°) and the adjacent land areas at the absence of a permanent snow cover leads to the high values of the irradiance balance (Fig. 1) it is positive over the major part of the Black Sea throughout the year except for selected sites off its northern coasts. [Pg.136]

Sixty milliliters of a solution containing Ce and Fe (as sulfates) were treated with alkali until a permanent precipitate formed. Then a few drops of hydrofluoric acid were added, the mixture boiled, and filtered. The precipitate was washed once with water, covered with dilute alkali, and tested with an acetic acid solution of benzidine.
