Perlite, properties

Perlite and Solka-floc are finely divided powders manufactured from a volcanic mineral and from wood pulp respectively, which have filtration properties very similar to those of diatomite. Like diatomite, they are inert to a wide range of process liquids. Like diatomite, they are available in a range of particle-size distributions to give the desired clarity and flowrate in different applications. On a cost-of-use basis, they are as economical as, or more economical than, diatomite. [Pg.112]

It should be noted that for polymerization-modified perlite the strength parameters of the composition algo go up with the increasing initial particle size. [164]. In some studies it has been shown that the filler modification effect on the mechanical properties of composites is maximum when only a portion of the filler surface is given the polymerophilic properties (cf., e.g. [166-168]). Cementitious materials use a hydraulically setting cement such as Portland cement as a binder with a filler material of good insulation properties, e.g., verminculite, perlite, etc. Concrete us frequently used for fireproofing because it is easily installed, readily available, is quite durable and generally economical compared to other methods. The second basic structural constituent of carbon steel, cementite (iron carbide, FesC), has completely different properties in contrast to ferrite. It is hard and brittle and thus cannot be cut. Cellulose fiber is applied to cover metallic cloths. The fibers form a highly compressed cake with good permeability for liquids, but a smaller retention ability for solid particles than that of (hatomite or perlite.
