Rather than using the protein molecule as a whole, the imprinting of selected protein epitopes may present a more practical approach. Imprints of such patches may then act as receptors for these parts of the protein. It could be shown that an MIP imprinted with a tetrapeptide was able to recognize not only the template but also a protein bearing the same 3-amino acid terminus as the peptide template [129]. If this approach proves to be successful in other cases as well, MI-based recognition will no longer be limited to small molecules. The result will be even more antibody like biomimetic polymers. [Pg.158]

Systematic investigations of mannose-binding proteins with clustered mannosides other than natural multiantennary oligosaccharides have been rather scarce until recently. However, using 6 -0-phosphorylated mannose disaccharide scaffolded on peptide templates using combinatorial glycopeptide libraries. [Pg.262]

The original system is based on peptides that contain heptad repeats, where the first and fourth positions of the repeat are hydrophobic amino acids. Such sequences form a-helices, which assemble into coiled-coil structures, as represented in Figure 7.10. The principle is then the same as that used for von Kiedrowski s self-replicating nucleotides (von Kiedrowski 1986), in the sense that a full-length peptide template (having in this case 32-35 residues) directs the condensation of the two half-length peptide substrates. [Pg.139]

Along the same lines, an artificial ion channel was prepared by Montal and coworkers [33] using the TASP approach. In their work, a four a-helix bundle structure 67 was synthesized on a peptide template. The ion transport ability was well characterized and 67 turned out to have several similarities with the natural acetylcholine receptor channel they were mimicking. [Pg.27]

In summary, quantitative, selective, and heterogeneous metal assembly was accomplished using a predesigned peptide template. Peptides with the predetermined number and sequence of metal coordination sites would allow template-directed arrays of metal-containing nanosized devices. [Pg.504]
