People’s challenge

I ve also discovered that determination of this magnitude is often a result of physical challenges when someone was young. So when you see determination in other people s handwriting understand that they are determined to meet all their goals, and that it s also a level of energy in addition to persistence.

This phrase from facbeth evokes a different kind of anarchy than that suggested by Hobbes s description of life in the state of nature, as "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short." It conveys a lack of coordination rather than a lack of cooperation, chaos rather than nastiness. In the preceding chapter we looked at some ways in which people s plans can be thwarted. But no society could work if everybody s plans were thwarted all the time. Universal frustration of plans would be chaos. 

Work is a significant part of most people s lives. When retirement is equated to not working, it suggests a great void. Of course there are aspects of work that everyone looks forward to giving up. But, on balance, work is an enjoyable experience for most people. It is this significance of work that makes the transition to retirement so challenging. 

Reality television is a trend that highlighted people s fascination with coping with common phobias, facing daunting challenges, and win large amounts of money. 

The image of the man emerging from the mire also brings to mind Dante s description of a muddy swamp in the underworld, where those guilty of the sin of acedia, or spiritual indifference, live for eternity These are the people who met life s challenges with anger or sullen apathy we might say that they failed to capture the precious sublimate and ended as clotted masses of prima materia.
