Penning processes

C. This IV region is too low for subsequent PEN processing. Therefore, SSP of the prepolymer is necessary to achieve the desired IV. A sufficiently high IV ( 1.0 g/dl) can be obtained at reasonable but prolonged reaction times via SSP, which is conducted under similar reaction conditions as PET. The reaction is commonly conducted batchwise in vacuo due to the limited commercial demand. [Pg.238]

In the frame of the theoretical formulation, in which the Penning process is described by the local quantities V+ R), T(/ ), and V+(R), the total cross section can be calculated as either (1) total absorption cross section atotaI from the complex phase shift for scattering by the complex potential V(R)= V (R)- r(R) or (2) as the sum of the partial cross sections a(Pgl), a(AI), and a(QI), into whose calculation also V+(R) enters in the form of matrix elements involving nuclear wave functions in this potential. [Pg.444]

Figure 19. Deviation of sum of partial cross sections from total ionization cross section, normalized to total ionization cross section, is plotted against the collision energy. All cross sections are calculated on basis of description of Penning process by local complex potential. Deviation is measure of inconsistency of their desorption for case of system He(2 S )-H. Recently the theory for evaluating Penning electron angular distributions in the frame of the quantum-mechanical Pgl formulation has also been reported63 and applied to the evaluation of the He -Ar data.64 In addition to the determination of an internal distribution similar to the one determined classically, this evaluation yields the result that the Penning process leads exclusively to He-Ar+ states the spatial wave functions of which have 2 symmetry. This result can, in turn, be used to calculate the population of the Ar+(2/>3/2il/2) fine-structure levels. The authors find excellent agreement with the available experimental data. [Pg.449]

The electron spectra show clearly that the electron is mainly emitted by the Penning process, and not by the two-step mechanism assumed earlier (2-4). [Pg.512]

Metastable atom bombardment (MAB) is another suitable ionization option for gas-phase organic compounds [11,12]. In this approach, ionization occurs through Penning processes of the type shown in reactions (2.21) and (2.22) by bombarding the sample with a beam of metastable species. The process depicted in reaction (2.21) involves an electrophilic reaction of the metastable atom (A ) to produce an odd-electron molecular ion of the analyte. The excitation energy of A must exceed the IE of the analyte molecule. With much higher excitation energy, dissociative ionization process also takes place [reaction (2.22)]. [Pg.28]

Methyl-l-Pen ten e. This olefin is produced commercially by dimeriza tion of propylene in the presence of potassium-based catalysts at 150—160°C and - 10 MPa. Commercial processes utilize several catalysts, such as sodium-promoted potassium carbonate and sodium- and alurninum-promoted potassium hydroxide (12—14) in a fixed-bed reactor. The reaction produces a mixture of C olefins containing 80—85% of 4-methyl- 1-pentene. [Pg.425]

Any program developed in-house must be easy to use, or user-friendly. If the program has various options for input, analysis, computation, and output, then it must provide the user with a fast way to select them. To meet this need, the system is likely to be menu-driven. The peripheral interactive devices such as mice, joysticks, light pens, graphic tablets, and templates are helpful and often used to expedite the selection process. [Pg.65]

Thermal cleavage of boron tris(trifluoromethane)sulfonate and boron tris(pen-tafluoroethane)sulfonate was studied. Careful identificadon of the products has led to the proposal of a mechanism and an account for this process [121] (equation 93). [Pg.608]

Double-beam spectrophotometers. Most modern general-purpose ultraviolet/ visible spectrophotometers are double-beam instruments which cover the range between about 200 and 800 nm by a continuous automatic scanning process producing the spectrum as a pen trace on calibrated chart paper. [Pg.667]

Polyester chemistry is the same as studied by Carothers long ago, but polyester synthesis is still a very active field. New polymers have been very recently or will be soon commercially introduced PTT for fiber applications poly(ethylene naph-thalate) (PEN) for packaging and fiber applications and poly(lactic acid) (PLA), a biopolymer synthesized from renewable resources (corn syrup) introduced by Dow-Cargill for large-scale applications in textile industry and solid-state molding resins. Polyesters with unusual hyperbranched architecture also recently appeared and are claimed to find applications as crosstinkers, surfactants, or processing additives. [Pg.20]
