Penicillium brevicaul

A biological test for arsenic employs Penicillium brevicaule (grown on sterilised bread at 37° C.), by which means 0-001 mg. As203 may be detected, a garlic odour being developed in about 24 hours 9 (see also p. 292). 

In cases of arsenical poisoning, the expired air contains traces of arsenic which may be detected by absorption with bromine and ammonia and treatment with a solution of Penicillium brevicaule (see p. 322).3... 

Liquid, bp 105°C. Said to be produced by the mould Penicillium brevicaule growing on wallpaper coloured green with arsenical green pigments. Causes chronic exposure to arsenic.

Carl Adolph von Basedow (1799-1854), a renown physician, engaged also in preventive health and hygiene, showed in 1844, that volatile organoarsenic compounds are released from Paris Green by Penicillium brevicaule That explained the cases of intoxication from mouldy wallpapers printed with this pigment.

Fenpropimorph was created by BASF as a systematizing plant protection fungicide. The broad-spectrum microbicide may be used as an active ingredient in formulations for wood protection, e.g. for the protection of freshly cut timber. Outstanding is its efficacy against Penicillium brevicaule and Lentinus tigrinus.
