Pelts

The sale of hides is on a weight basis. The value of a hide depends on the type of animal, the seasonal characteristics, the location of the slaughter, the type of cure, and the market conditions. Cost of the hides is about 50% of the sale price of the leather, so an accurate knowledge of the hides and the leathermaking potential of the hides is critical to commercial success. In the case of furs and exotic skin leather production, the value of the pelt is by far the most important factor (7). [Pg.83]

The uncured wool from the forming conveyor is separated into pelts , which are converted into pipe sections by being wrapped around a heated mandrel, and the wall thickness set by counter rollers. The sections are then passed through a curing oven before being trimmed, slit, covered and packaged. [Pg.120]

Complete blood counts were normal in four individuals overcome by unknown concentrations of hydrogen sulfide gas in a pelt room (Audeau et al. 1985). Percent hemoglobin saturation was unchanged by inhalation of either 5 ppm hydrogen sulfide by volunteers during 30 minutes of submaximal exercise (Bhambhani et al. 1994), or 10 ppm hydrogen sulfide during two 30 minute sessions of submaximal exercise (Bhambhani et al. 1997). [Pg.58]

Urinary thiosulfate levels were measured in volunteers exposed to 8, 18, or 30 ppm of hydrogen sulfide for 30-45 minutes and compared to levels in unexposed individuals at a pelt processing plant (Kangas... [Pg.82]

When the radius of an aerosol particle, r, is of the order of the mean free path, i, of gas molecules, neither the diffusion nor the kinetic theory can be considered to be strictly valid. Arendt and Kallman (1926), Lassen and Rau (1960) and Fuchs (1964) have derived attachment theories for the transition region, r, which, for very small particles, reduce to the gas kinetic theory, and, for large particles, reduce to the classical diffusion theory. The underlying assumptions of the hybrid theories are summarized by Van Pelt (1971) as follows 1. the diffusion theory applies to the transport of unattached radon progeny across an imaginary sphere of radius r + i centred on the aerosol particle and 2. kinetic theory predicts the attachment of radon progeny to the particle based on a uniform concentration of radon atoms corresponding to the concentration at a radius of r + L... [Pg.145]
