PDMS, polydimethylsiloxane filled

A study of the pervaporation separation of ethanol/water mixtures by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes filled with phosphazene nanotubes showed selectivity favoring water over ethanol, which corresponds to the behavior of the host polymer. The nanotubes were reported to increase permeation flux and selectivity. This conclusion was further supported by the use of a TFE/phenoxy/2-allylphenoxy phosphazene host in place of PDMS. Phosphazenes also can be used as a cross-linker for traditional organic polymers to impart greater performance in the separation of water and ethanol. In this work, poly(vinyl alcohol) membranes were cross-linked with cyclotriphosphazene substituted with 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde... 

The as-synthesized amine intercalated VO, nanolubes could be aligned on glass substrates by using micromolding in capillaries (MIMIC).86 An elastomeric polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) stamp where parallel capillaries of 5 pm were patterned was used as the mould.86 The capillaries were filled with a VO, nanotube suspension in octanol. After evaporation of the solvent and removal of the mould, long lines of assemblies of well aligned nanotubes were obtained.

Silicone elastomers are encountered in a variety of applications, such as sealants used for baths and showers as well as other applications where gaps are to be filled with a water impervious flexible material, mouldings used in medical applications, fuser rolls in printers, etc. SiUcone elastomers are usually based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Linear PDMS is normally a hquid at ambient temperatures. Even the very high molar mass materials show viscoelastic rather than solid behaviour.The polymer is a simple flnear chain with terminal hydroxyl groups at each end. The of the backbone is about —90°C. 

A good example of this is provided by the children s toy called bouncing putty . This is, in fact, liquid polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), in which the polymer chain ends have hydroxyl groups, and the liquid is filled with solid boric oxide powder (Figure 8.7).
