PDF investigations

Let us proceed with the description of the results from theory and simulation. First, consider the case of a narrow barrier, w = 0.5, and discuss the pair distribution functions (pdfs) of fluid species with respect to a matrix particle, gfm r). This pdf has been a main focus of previous statistical mechanical investigations of simple fluids in contact with an individual permeable barrier via integral equations and density functional methodology [49-52].

In 1975, SAR studies involving actinonin investigated an analogue in which the orientation of the Pl -P2 amide bond was reversed (13), but the compound was found to lack antibacterial activity. Since then, however, descriptions of some /i-aminohydroxamic acids and /i-amino-A-formyl-A-hydroxylamines as PDF inhibitors have appeared in the patent literature. Patent applications from Senju [97] and De Novo [98] pharmaceuticals cover Pl -P2 amides (14), ureas (15, 16) and sulfonamides (17). 

Two PDF inhibitors, BB-83698 (8) and LBM-415 (12), have been investigated in Phase I clinical trials, and these studies represent the most advanced status that any PDF inhibitor has attained. BB-83968 was investigated for intravenous administration, while LBM-415 was studied following oral administration.

Initial reports on chemoenzymatic block copolymer synthesis focus on the enzymatic macroinitiation from chemically obtained hydroxy-functional polymers (route A in Fig. 4). The first report on enzymatic macroinitiation was published by Kumar et ah, who used anionically synthesized hydroxy-functional polybutadiene of various molecular weights ranging from 2600 to 19,000Da (Fig. 5) [16]. In a systematic study, the authors investigated the efficiency of the macroinitiation of CL and PDF by Novozym 435 as a function of the polybutadiene macroinitiator. Because of the number of standards in the PDF, it is not possible, in general, to search each entry individually. However, in many situations the analyst either knows or can make an educated guess as to the probable identity of the unknown. In this intuitive case, the PDF can be consulted directly and the cards for the suspected compounds can be consulted quickly. In fact, when a specific phase diagram is being investigated it is common practice to obtain powder diffraction patterns of all known phases in the system. If the 20 axis of these "reference" patterns is the same as that for unknown patterns, an unknown pattern can be compared directly to these relatively few standards on an illuminated viewing table and the diffraction lines from the known phases can be identified on the unknown pattern. As new phases are discovered and identified, their patterns may then be added to this reference file.

A one-dimensional Fokker-Planck equation was used by Smoluchowski [19], and the bivariate Fokker-Planck equation in phase space was investigated by Klein [21] and Kramers [22], Note that, in essence, the Rayleigh equation [23] is a monovariate Fokker-Planck equation in velocity space. Physically, the Fokker-Planck equation describes the temporal change of the pdf of a particle subjected to diffusive motion and an external drift, manifest in the second- and first-order spatial derivatives, respectively. Mathematically, it is a linear second-order parabolic partial differential equation, and it is also referred to as a forward Kolmogorov equation. The most comprehensive reference for Fokker-Planck equations is probably Risken s monograph [14]. 

The desorption data collected during this investigation were analyzed with a distributed-rate model that has been described in detail elsewhere (Culver et al. 1997 Deitsch et al. 1998 Deitsch and Smith 1999). Briefly, to account for soil heterogeneity, the distributed-rate model replaces a single mass-transfer rate coefficient with a continuous distribution of rate coefficients.
