Early electron microscopic studies showed that adenovirus enters cells via receptor-mediated endocytosis (Patterson and Russell, 1983). Consistent with these early morphologic studies, adenovirus uptake into cells was shown to involve dynamin (Wang et al, 1998), a 100-kDa GTPase that regulates endosome formation (Sever et al, 1999 Marks et al, 2001). The mathematical function that must be interpreted in order to deduce the heavy atom coordinates, a puzzle really, is called a Patterson function or Patterson synthesis (Patterson, 1935). It has a form similar to the equation for electron density except that all phases are effectively zero. It yields, also in a similar manner, a three-dimensional density distribution. The peaks in this map, however, do not correspond to electron density centers but mark the interatomic vectors relating those centers.

Thus, the different absorption rates, the effects of other dietary components on the forms of vanadium in the stomach, and the rate of transformation into V appear markedly to affect the proportion of ingested vanadium that is absorbed (Patterson et al. 1986, Chasteen et al. 1986, Wiegman et al. 1982, Hansard etal. 1982b). Studies with humans and an intake of 11 to 39 pg V per day showed renal and lactational excretions of vanadium of approximately 5% and 16%, respectively. The apparent absorption rate varied between 10 and 25% (Table 27.5) (Anke et al. 1998d). Besides the form of vanadium, it is also the quantity of vanadium present that influences the absorption rate of this ultratrace element.
