The aim of this paper is to spotlight some of the important issues on construction of oriented and/or patterned conjugated polymers. As no attempt has been made for a comprehensive literature siuvey, the examples presented are not exhaustive. [Pg.309]

Polymers, large molecules made up of smaller molecules in a repeating pattern, are used for many electrochromic materials. Conjugating polymers, which have alternating single and double bonds, are particularly suitable. Figure B shows the electrochemical oxidation of the conjugated polymer, polythiophene. As mentioned in the introduction, the electrical conductivity upon doping is one of the most important physical properties of conjugated polymers. The conductivity ranges from lOOOOOS/cm for iodine-doped polyacetylene [41], 1000 S/cm for doped and stretched polypyrrole [42], to 500 S/cm for doped PPP [43], 150 S/cm for hydrochloric acid doped and stretched polyaniline [44], and 100 S/cm for sulfuric acid doped PPV [45] to 50 S/cm for iodine-doped poly thiophene [46]. The above listed conductivities refer to the unsubstituted polymers other substitution patterns can lead to different film morphologies and thus to a different electrical conductivity for the same class of conjugated polymer in the doped state. [Pg.14]

This chapter has provided some examples of the ways in which conjugated polymers can be prepared. While the account is not of course exhaustive, and indeed many extremely important synthetic routes have not been included, such as the formation of polyacetylene by the Durham route,it does serve to illustrate that the range of synthetic techniques vary from the simple to the extremely sophisticated. Electrochemical synthesis is largely in the former classihcation, however, it does have considerable potential in the design of materials for molecular electronics since it will allow patterns to be formed on the electrode surface. With the continuing demand for new materials both for electronic and power distribution needs, it is to be expected that this area will continue to develop in the foreseeable future. [Pg.186]
