Patients are not the only victims of connterfeit drugs. Pharmaceutical companies can lose income from connterfeit drng competition. Public confidence in the company can be nndermined, leading it to stop buying the prodnct and instead pnrchase a competitor s product even after the connterfeit has been destroyed. A fast identification of the connterfeit drng is in the interest of pharmacentical companies and the protection of patients rights.

If a patient insists on speaking with a pharmacist, explain that the pharmacist is busy with another patient right now. Jacobs advocates having the technician take down the patient s name and phone number and the reason for the call so that the pharmacist can prepare for the call prior to calling back, which also saves time. 

I have reviewed what the FDA has made available through the Freedom of Information Act as its complete file on ECT. For individualized medicine to become a reality, all of these things— genotyping, assurance of patients rights, research for small groups, and altered trial design and its acceptance by regulatory agencies—must happen simultaneously. Professionals within the clinical relationship should work within a legal framework that defines the domain of each and respects the following patient rights ... 

Privacy, a patient right, dictates that no nonauthorized persons have access to their room, clinical history, or databases where pertinent information can be found. 

Another bill that garnered widespread bipartisan support was the patient bill of rights, which riveted national attention on remedies proposed to improve the quality of health care and eliminate managed care abuses. Chief among the bill s provisions is the restoration of patient rights to have better access to the provider of their choice and prescriptions selected by their physicians. 

Undeniably, genomics and pharmacogenomics opens up a whole host of legal, ethical, and societal issues that will have implications in patient confidentiality, discrimination, malpractice, and informed consent (135-137). However, as clinicians, scientists, and health care practitioners, we must always remember the unquestionable power of an individual s right to choose, and prospectively fight to ensure patients rights and prevent genomic discrimination.
