Continental margin, rifted

Passive continental margin — rifted continental margins developed on thick continental crust on the edges of continents sedimentaiy basins on the trailing edge of a continent.

This group includes peridotite massifs dominated by fertile Iherzolites that were exhumed in the early stages of continental rifting and exposed as denuded mantle on the seafloor, along passive continental margins.

Still during the Early Cretaceous, the establishment of the initial outlines of continental margins in the African and South American plates (proto-rift phase) caused subsidence of the central part of the depression and the development of a new shallow lacustrine environment. After this, narrow rift basins developed and Gondwana was fragmented.

Hydrothermal systems related to rifted continental margins are known from the Red Sea and at Guaymas Basin in the Gulf of California. In both cases continental crust occurs in close-proximity to narrow axial rifts. This, along with unique sedimentary features in these basins, has a strong influence on the hydrothermal systems.
