Partitioning INDEX

The partition index (IR, which will be discussed in details below) of Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni and Zn in both soils rapidly increased from time zero (calculated value) to one day and further to one year. This was especially true for Cr, Cu and to some extent Ni and Cd (Table 6.5). This result indicates that added trace metals are initially and rapidly transferred from the labile EXC fraction into the more stable fractions. Furthermore, IR of trace metals in native arid soils incubated under the saturated paste regime decreased at the end of year. This indicates mobilization of trace elements in these soils as saturation (Table 6.5). Also, it can be seen that IR decreased, for any given time, with an increase of the loading level (Table 6.5, Fig. 6.5). This means that higher additions of soluble metals result in higher metal content in the labile fractions and lower metal binding intensity in soils. [Pg.175]

The reduced partitioning index (mean IR values) of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn in 45 Israeli arid-zone soils is presented in Fig. 6.7. The trends for mean IR values for five heavy metals in these soils were as follows Cr > Zn = Cu > Ni > Cd (Fig. 6.7) (IR is calculated from Banin et al., 1997a). This indicates that Cr is strongly bound to solid-phase components, possessing... [Pg.180]

An additional complication in the PIMC simulations arises when Bose or Fermi statistics is included in the formalism. The trace in the partition function allows for paths which may end at a particle index which is different from the starting index. In this way larger, closed paths may build up which eventually spread over the entire system. All such possible paths corresponding to the exchange of indistinguishable particles have to be taken into account in the partition function. For bosons these contributions are summed up for fermions the number of permutations of particle indices involved decides whether the contribution is added (even) or subtracted (odd) in the partition function. [Pg.94]

In accordance with expectations, the branching index classifies the major partition of the investigated sample as nb/lcb glucans. On CL 2B, as well as on S-1000, the major percentage of components was eluted in the selective separation range, and a minor amount of high dp scb glucans in both systems was eluted at the exclusion limit. [Pg.480]

Here /, are the three moments of inertia. The symmetry index a is the order of the rotational subgroup in the molecular point group (i.e. the number of proper symmetry operations), for H2O it is 2, for NH3 it is 3, for benzene it is 12 etc. The rotational partition function requires only information about the atomic masses and positions (eq. (12.14)), i.e. the molecular geometry. [Pg.301]

It would take us too far out of our way to explore the territory opened up by this way of looking at Polya s Theorem, but we can take a quick look at the view and pick out some of the salient features. The cycle index, in its new clothes, is expressible in terms of -functions conversely, an 5-function can be regarded as a sort of cycle index. The 5-function for a partition can be defined by... [Pg.122]

The use of Polya s Theorem in a specialized context such as the above, has led to the extension of the theorem along certain useful lines. One such derivation pertains to the situation where the boxes are not all filled from the same store of figures. More specifically, the boxes are partitioned into a number of subsets, and there is a store of figures peculiar to each subset. To make sense of this we must assume that no two boxes in different subsets are in the same orbit of the group in question. A simple extension of Polya s Theorem enables us to tackle problems of this type. Instead of the cycle index being a function of a single family of variables, the 5j, we have other families of variables, one for each subset. An example from chemical enumeration will make this clear. [Pg.125]

Kier and coworkers found that the molecular connectivity-index and such molecular properties as polarizability, molecular volume," and partition coefficients between water and octanol"" show very good correlation. Because all of these properties could be correlated with biological activity. [Pg.229]

Each of these scales produce a lipophilicity index related but not identical to octanol-water partitioning. [Pg.39]

From an analysis of the key properties of compounds in the World Dmg Index the now well accepted Rule-of-5 has been derived [25, 26]. It was concluded that compounds are most Hkely to have poor absorption when MW>500, calculated octanol-water partition coefficient Clog P>5, number of H-bond donors >5 and number of H-bond acceptors >10. Computation of these properties is now available as a simple but efficient ADME screen in commercial software. The Rule-of-5 should be seen as a qualitative absorption/permeabiHty predictor [43], rather than a quantitative predictor [140]. The Rule-of-5 is not predictive for bioavail-abihty as sometimes mistakenly is assumed. An important factor for bioavailabihty in addition to absorption is liver first-pass effect (metaboHsm). The property distribution in drug-related chemical databases has been studied as another approach to understand drug-likeness [141, 142]. [Pg.41]
