PARTICIPATION IN PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

One Cohort IV interviewee asserted The ACS meetings are just so huge that I don t find them useful. There aren t many people in my field who speak at those meetings... I find the organization kind of paternalistic towards African Americans and people of color in general.  

A Cohort III interviewee exclaimed NOBCChE is absolutely necessary. Because of the small numbers of Afro-Americans in the area of chemistry sort of get overlooked by the larger organizations. It provides African Americans with

One of the predominantly white organizations had a program for minority students, and no minorities showed up. This was because they hadn t really advertised it. They didn t know how to reach out to the minority community. I find a lot of this sort of ignorance and it s a turn off

XI. The right of professional employees to participate in the activities of their professional societies will be recognized. 

Many quality assurance managers, particularly for field laboratories, have learned their skills on the job. Very few tertiary courses exist to help quality assurance managers, but assiduous searching of the Internet, subscription to journals such as Accreditation and Quality Assurance, and participation in the activities of professional organizations allow analysts to build their expertise. I hope that this book will fill in some gaps for such quality assurance personnel and that it will give students and new professionals a head start.

A component of living that is often overlooked by the professional community is the desire and, in fact, need of people with disabiHties to participate in recreational activities. Many of the adaptive recreational technologies have been developed by persons with disabiHties themselves in their effort to participate and be competitive in sports. Competitive wheelchair racing, archery, skiing, bicycles, and technology that enables people to bowl, play pool, and fly their own airplanes are just a few areas in which equipment has been adapted for specific recreational purposes.
