Paraform

It is marketed as a 35-40 per cent, solution in water (formalin). The rpactions of formaldehyde are partly typical of aldehydes and partly peculiar to itself. By evaporating an aqueous solution paraformaldehyde or paraform (CHjO), an amorphous white solid is produced it is insoluble in most solvents. When formaldehyde is distilled from a 60 per cent, solution containing 2 per cent, of sulphuric acid, it pol5unerises to a crystalline trimeride, trioxane, which can be extracted with methylene chloride this is crystalline (m.p. 62°, b.p. 115°), readily soluble in water, alcohol and ether, and devoid of aldehydic properties ... [Pg.319]

Oxybutynin Oxybutynin, 4-diethylamino-2-butynylic ester a-phenylclohexaneglycolic acid (14.1.35), is synthesized either by a Mannich reaction using propargyl ester of a-phenyl-a-cyclohexaneglycoUc acid, paraform and diethylamine, or transesterification of the methyl ester of a-phenyl-a-cyclohexaneglycolic acid using l-acetoxy-4-diethylamino-2-butene in the presence of sodium methoxide [26]. [Pg.203]

Of all these polymers, Paraformaldehyde is the only one which is manufd on a large commercial scale. It is also known as Paraform,... [Pg.546]

The base of the cation-exchange membrane is mostly phenolsulfonic add. This is condensated with formaldehyde or paraform in an add medium (61, 68, 116, 119, 133, 171). Sulfonated alkyl-aryl ethers are also used (32,10). Instead of sulfonic-acid groups, sometimes carboxylic groups are introduced (10). [Pg.311]

A procedure based on condensation with phenol and paraform (used as formaldehyde source) was developed to convert spent UNEX solvent (CCD, PEG-400, Ph2-CMPO, and FS-13) into a solid infusible resin for disposal. The resulting material is insoluble in aqueous alkali and acidic solutions and organic solvents. Incorporation of FS-13 in the cross-linked polymer was confirmed by physicochemical methods. Resistance of the cured resin to high temperatures was proven by thermogravimetry... [Pg.141]

Selective haloalkylation of aromatic compounds has also been achieved by employing alkyl haloalkyl ethers as the haloalkylating agents, as seen from equations (88) and (89). However, the use of chlo-romethyl ethers in chloromethylation (equation 89) is discouraged due to the carcinogenic nature of the ether substrate. As an alternative, chloromethylation reactions can also be carried out using paraformal-dehyde-HCl in the presence of ZnCh or SnCU as catalyst. ... [Pg.321]
