Antimony trioxide and chlorinated paraffinic derivatives are common materials used as fire retardants, as are intumescent zinc (or calcium) borate, aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide. These inorganic materials, used as bulk fillers, act to reduce the fire hazard. Halogenated materials release chlorine, which then combines with the antimony trioxide to form the trichloride, which is a flame suppressant. 

In 1998, UOP announced the development of a new Sorbex process called the MMP Sorbex process [15-19] that was capable of simultaneously separating both Cio i6 mono-branched paraffins and Cio i6 normal paraffins from a corresponding kerosene stream or n-paraffin-depleted Molex raffinate stream. Previously, no commercial process existed to isolate significant quantities of mono-methyl paraffin derived from either kerosene or n-paraffin depleted kerosene. Mono-methyl paraffins are desirable because they are needed for a new type of anionic surfactant.

NOTES.—(d) When aromatic compounds bum they produce a large amount of soot. Soot is also formed when unsaturated compounds and paraffin derivatives which contain alkyl radicals with four or more carbon atoms are burned. The simpler paraffin derivatives do not produce soot on burning. The behavior of an unknown substance on ignition is frequently determined as a preliminary test in its identification. The test is best made by putting some of the liquid or solid on a small roll of copper gauze, to which a piece of wire is attached to serve as a handle.

Puskas et al. extracted paraffinic deposits from oil wells and pipelines (47). This hydrophobic paraffin derivative had a high molar mass and melting point and contained polar end groups (carbonyls). This paraffinic derivative stabilized water-in-oil emulsions at concentrations of 1 to 2%.

Radical substitutions in paraffin derivatives do not take place by attack on carbon as in the 5 and reactions. Instead, they involve abstraction of an atom, usually hydrogen, by a radical reagent to give an alkyl radical which then reacts in some way to form the product. This secondary reaction also usually involves transfer of an atom to the alkyl radical from some normal molecule which is thus in turn converted to a radical. The result is a radical chain reaction in which radicals effectively catalyze substitution. A good example is the photochemical bromination of paraffins, which takes place in the following way ...
