When flux measurements are corrected for calm conditions, the net carbon balance may be nearly neutral. One of the studies in an old-growth forest in the Tapajos National Forest, Para, Brazil, showed a small net CO2 source (Saleska et al., in press). The results in that forest were supported by measurements of biomass (forest inventory) (Rice et al., in press). Living trees were accumulating carbon, but the decay of downed wood released more, for a small net source. Both fluxes suggest that the stand was recovering from a disturbance several years earlier.

This palm, locally known as buriti is widespread in the Amazon region. The fruit flesh contains 35.75% oil (dry basis), while the oil content of the kernel is negligible. An analysis of the flesh oil is available, from a survey carried out by the University of Para, Brazil (Serruya et al., 1980).

The 2-hydroxy-6-methylacetophenone was isolated as exocrine compound in several neotropical species of ants in the dolichoderine genus Hypoclinea (Hypoclinea analis, Hypoclinea abrupta, Hypoclinea bidens A). The ants were collected in Belem, Para, Brazil [2641,2650]. It was also isolated from the bodies of Rhytidoponem aciculata (Australian ponerine ant) [2651,2652].
