Bars and stick products are flow-wrapped. The printed wrapping, which may be coated paper, orientated polypropylene or metallized film, is supplied as a long roll. The wrapping is unwound from the roll and made into a continuous tubular sleeve (Figure 5.17a). Products are placed in the sleeve (Figure 5.17b), which is heat or pressure sealed along its seam. Because the fibers generally are anisotropic, they tend to be deposited on the wire in layers under shear. There is Htde tendency for fibers to be oriented in an out-of-plane direction, except for small undulations where one fiber crosses or passes beneath another. The layered stmcture results in the different properties measured in the thickness direction as compared to those measured in the in-plane direction. SFA has been traditionally used to measure the forces between modified mica surfaces. Before the JKR theory was developed, Israelachvili and Tabor [57] measured the force versus distance (F vs. d) profile and pull-off force (Pf) between steric acid monolayers assembled on mica surfaces. The authors calculated the surface energy of these monolayers from the Hamaker constant determined from the F versus d data. In a later paper on the measurement of forces between surfaces immersed in a variety of electrolytic solutions, Israelachvili [93] reported that the interfacial energies in aqueous electrolytes varies over a wide range (0.01-10 mJ/m-). In this work Israelachvili found that the adhesion energies depended on pH, type of cation, and the crystallographic orientation of mica. [Pg.107]

The treatment of transverse shear stress effects in plates made of isotropic materials stems from the classical papers by Reissner [6-26] and Mindlin [6-27. Extension of Reissner s theory to plates made of orthotropic materials is due to Girkmann and Beer [6-28], Ambartsumyan [6-29] treated symmetrically laminated plates with orthotropic laminae having their principal material directions aligned with the plate axes. Whitney [6-30] extended Ambartsumyan s analysis to symmetrically laminated plates with orthotropic laminae of arbitrary orientation. [Pg.350]
