Panic button

In addition to the use of such manual valves, automatically operated valves may be considered as an additional safeguard in certain installations. These can be connected to (among other interlocks) panic buttons sited within the building, which they are protecting. This is a recommended requirement for buildings containing plant of over 2 MW total heat input and supplied with gas at above 1 bar.

In addition, each hallway and each room should have an emergency ( panic ) button that will set off an alarm and by-pass the computer-controlled access system on each door. This system allows anyone to enter a laboratory when an emergency occurs that requires immediate assistance, or to leave the laboratory. Because pressing the button triggers a series of events and emergency responses and subverts security, it should only be used for a true emergency. 

The controlled area shall have a clearly marked Panic Button (a non-lockable disconnect switch) that allows rapid deactivation of the laser. 

Panic buttons are needed at times when someone is confronted with an abusive person. Any such alarm system may incorporate a telephone paging system to direct others to the location of the disturbance, but alarm systems must not depend on the use of a telephone to summon assistance. 

Employers concerned with Type II events need to be aware that the control of physical access through workplace design is also an important preventive measure. This can include controlling access into and out of the workplace and freedom of movement within the workplace, in addition to placing barriers between clients and service providers. Escape routes can also be a critical component of workplace design. In certain situations, the installation of alarm systems or panic buttons may be an appropriate back-up measure. Establishing a buddy system to be used in specified emergencies is often advisable as well. The presence of security personnel should also be considered where appropriate.

Keep car keys and cell phone on your nightstand. If you hear suspicious noises in the night, press the panic button to set off the car alarm. Given the commotion, an intruder is likely to flee the scene. Landlines can be cut having a cell phone near at night secures the opportunity to call 911 if necessary.
