Paint additives improver

The three main components have been discussed earlier in more detail but one class of component remains, namely, additives. Additives are substances that are added in small quantities to a paint to improve or to modify certain properties of the finished paint coatings or of the paint during its manufacture, storage, transport, or application. The amount of additives in a paint can be as little as 0.001 percent and seldom more than 5 percent. The average proportion of a single additive in a formulation is usually around 1.5 percent of the total quantity of the paint formulation. [Pg.227]

Can corrosion. This may be caused by incorrect pH of latex paints, or incorrect choice of ingredients leading to acidic by-products on storage. The remedy is careful selection of can lining, or perhaps the addition of anticorrosive agents to the paint, or improved formulation and adjustment. [Pg.249]

Metal salts of lecithin have been patented as paint additives (435). These salts are reported to improve pigment dispersion, and act as drying promoters and inhibit yellowing of the product. The same patent also promotes the use of phosphorylated lecithin as a rust inhibitor in primer paints. Further, if metal oxides are chemically reacted with lecithin by heating, the dispersibility of metal oxides in both aqueous and organic solvents is improved (436). [Pg.1793]

Paint additives are auxiliary products that are added to coatings, usually in small amounts, to improve particular technical properties of the paints or coating films. Paint additives are named in accordance with their mode of action. [Pg.5]

Alternatively, the addition of polar solvents to hydrocarbon-based paints will improve the solubility of the thickener molecules, and decrease the chance of particles or clusters of molecules forming because of borderline solubility. This will lessen or even remove the effectiveness of the thickener. Again the same principles apply to aqueous coatings additions of water-miscible organic solvents (e.g. ether-alcohols) increase the solvency of the medium for the hydrophobic portions of the associative thickeners and lessen their tendency to associate. [Pg.141]

Degussa has managed to develop the first industrial application of ionic liquids as performance additives to a new range of paints, for improved finish, appearance, and drying properties [53, 56, 57]. The range is marketed under the name TEGO Dispers, and added to the Pliolite paint range. [Pg.243]

In addition to the cleaning of the surface, a chemical conversion treatment or an anodizing process can be applied which offers more homogenous surface properties. The oxide layer is stabilized and the adhesion of the adhesive, the primer, or the paint is improved. Anodizing is commonly used to prepare aluminium for bonding in the aerospace industry. [Pg.970]

In order to improve the gas-barrier properties of polymeric substrates, it is important to explore the use of suitable fillers. Various experimental and simulation studies have shown the effectiveness of using additives in the form of flake-shaped fillers/pigments in the manufacture of paints to improve... [Pg.244]

Differences among the processes have a major impact on the use of the products. Products from a particular process or manufacturer may dominate one market, while products from a different process may be preferred in a different appHcation. Major uses include hot-melt adhesives for appHcations requiring high temperature performance, additives to improve the processing of plastics, sHp and mb additives for inks and paints, and cosmetic appHcations. [Pg.317]

For converting rust to clinging layers as a basis for coatings of paint and varnish, the addition of alkyl phosphates to phosphoric acid is suggested to improve its wettability and penetration [260]. [Pg.608]
