Packing ring seals

Nevertheless, the simple and reliable coil spring seal has proven itself in the pumping industry and is often selected for use despite its drawbacks. In regulated industries, this type of seal design far exceeds the capabilities of a compressed packing ring seal. 

Main Seal Body The term seal body makes reference to all rotating pai ts on a pusher seal, excluding shaft packing and seal ring. In many cases it is the chief reason to avoid a particular design for a particular seiwice. 

The mechanical seal runs in the same space previously occupied by the packing rings (Figure 13-1 and Figure 13-2, next page). 

A big part of the overall problem with adequate mechanical. seal life is trying to make a precision mechanical seal run into the same. space that previously was occupied by the packing rings. Pump design evolved over time to accommodate the packing rings. 

Erosion is the wear of the pump internal parts by suspended solid particles contained in the fluid being pumped. The most affected parts are wear rings, shaft sleeves, packing, mechanical seal faces, lip seals, the pump casing and the impeller. 

Fluorinated hydrocarbons of fatty consistency can be used for lubricating metal surfaces and taps, with an external seal of piceine. Packing rings of lead, soft iron, or copper are used when connecting metal apparatus. Litharge in glycerol is a suitable cement.
