Ceramic packings were dumped throu a chute installed at the manhole. This caused pieces of packing to stratify in layers on an inclined plane ( hill formation), as well as breakage. This resulted in pocn- liquid distribution, low efilciency, and low oqwcity. 

Cross-flow devices. Equipment manufacturers have modified the CPI configuration for horizontal water flow perpendicular to the axis of plate corrugations. This allows plates to Lie installed at a steeper angle to facilitate sediment removal and enables the plate pack to be more conveniently packaged in a pressure vessel. The latter advantage is critical if gas blowby through an upstream dump valve could cause relief problems in an atmospheric tank.

Installed costs for dumped packings are given by several of the references in Table 16.19. Table 16.27, which was developed by taking averages of those costs, indexed to CE = 394, and adding some additional values from vendors, includes eosts for six different dumped packings and five different materials.
