Installation packing

At the present time, unless other factors are decisive, a third-generation random packing choice is the best starting point for packing installations. Situations where structured packing is the preferred choice include vacuum operation and where very high numbers of theoretical stages are required. 

The FDA has the authority to inspect facilities at which investigational devices are being held, including any establishments where devices are manufactured, packed, installed, used, implanted, or where records of use are kept. Sponsors, IRBs, and investigators are required to permit authorized FDA employees reasonable access at reasonable times to inspect and copy all records of an investigation. Upon notice, the FDA may inspect and copy records that identify subjects. 

Vertical bars (e.g., downcomer supports) are generally far less detrimental to distribution and open area but would hinder structured packing installation. Usually, these are only removed if they are likely to interfere adversely with the new internals or with liquid flow through them (386). Some designers (299a) prefer to always have these removed.

Where downtime is critical. Dry packing is faster, and also permits packing installation before the column is ready for leak testing. 

Poor packing installation may cause maldistribution, excessive pressure drop, and loss of efficiency, capacity, or both (34, 257, 303, 439). Poor packing installation may also damage packings and supports. It is therefore imperative that packing be properly installed. 

The following procedure has been recommended (168) for structured packing installation.

Excessive stuffing box packing wear insuffident lubrication/excessive shaft wobble/shaft is out of round/improper packing installation and maintenance.
