Use For hose and tubing, ice and frozen-food bags, food packaging and stretch wrap, and impact modifiers when blended with other polymers.

Skin packaging employs material properties which are similar to stretch wrapping in that the film employed may stretch in the process. However, heat and vacuum are usually employed, hence stretch may also approach an orientation operation. In terms of material, Surlyn ionomer and Saran may be used as well as the more conventional materials. 

A wrap is the simplest form ot plastic package, using a flat piece ot plastic film that is folded or wound around the packaged item. Wraps are used to an extent for retail packages, but the largest market is stretch wrap for pallet loads of products, serving to unitize and stabilize them during distribution.

Over 16 million tons of post-user plastics waste is produced in Western Europe every year and more than half is produced by households (Table 4.1). Although many items of packaging are re-used at least once (notably carrier bags and bottles), this does little to reduce the burden on the municipal waste collection systems. The source of packaging waste is not always clear in published statistics. Stretch-wrap film used for packaging hay is not classified as agricultural waste nor does it appear as industrial waste but it is a severe pollution problem for the farmer and a visual blight in the countryside.

Utility refers to functionality or convenience provided by the package for one or more entities involved in prodnct manufacture, distribution, or use. For example, cooking sprays in aerosol cans produce a lubricating effect in a frying pan with mnch less prodnct than wonld be required without the aerosol. The carton on a tnbe of toothpaste permits the retailer to stack the tubes on the shelf without them rolling off. The metal edge on the carton of plastic wrap permits the consumer to tear off the desired amount of the product. As PVC film is no longer permitted to be used as stretch wrap film for food packaging since 2006, PE film is widely used now from supermarket to home in China. BHT, Irganox 1076, and Irgafos 168 are typical antioxidants usually added in several plastic packaging materials especially in PE films. Migration of additives from PP, PET, P VDC, PVC, and PE under traditional conditions is studied in the last a few years but less under microwave heating conditions.
