Package reliability

This range of vendor-to-user responsibility is an essential consideration for making an informed hardware choice. There are choices available for both controllers and the functions within them. The fundamental set of requirements involve speed, scale, packaging, reliability, and peripherals. These requirements must be satisfied before successfully applying any control system technology.

Segregation may also be necessary in the packaging of products not only to prevent visible damage but electrical damage, as with electrostatic-sensitive devices. Segregation may be the only way of providing adequate product identity, as is the case with fasteners. While a well-equipped laboratory can determine the difference between products and materials the consumer needs a simple practical method of identification and labeled packets are often a reliable and economic alternative. 

When specifying compressor packages to API 1 IP, it may be necessary to specify certain sections of API 618 to ensure satisfactory installations. An example of this would be the supply of multiple compressors to be located in pipeline booster stations. In this case, an analog or digital pulsation and vibration study per API 618 Section 3.9 would be advisable to improve reliability and to minimize system problems and potential damage caused by gas pulsations and interaction between the individual compressor packages. 

Where small and/or single contaminant effluents are encountered, packaged treatment plants may be acceptable. Consideration should, however, be given to capital cost, payback period, reliability of equipment, maintenance, plant-life expectancy and contaminant-removal efficiencies. 

Although less widely reported than the effects of vapours, contact corrosion has been a serious problem in packaging and in electronicsAs miniaturisation and sophistication of electronic devices has increased, the hazard presented by corrosion is often the limiting factor inhibiting the attainment of expected levels of reliability.
