Pack, George

Both attractive forces and repulsive forces are included in van der Waals interactions. The attractive forces are due primarily to instantaneous dipole-induced dipole interactions that arise because of fluctuations in the electron charge distributions of adjacent nonbonded atoms. Individual van der Waals interactions are weak ones (with stabilization energies of 4.0 to 1.2 kj/mol), but many such interactions occur in a typical protein, and, by sheer force of numbers, they can represent a significant contribution to the stability of a protein. Peter Privalov and George Makhatadze have shown that, for pancreatic ribonuclease A, hen egg white lysozyme, horse heart cytochrome c, and sperm whale myoglobin, van der Waals interactions between tightly packed groups in the interior of the protein are a major contribution to protein stability. 

The detector used to measure indoor radon was the latest version of the passive activated carbon device developed at EML (George, 1984 Warner, 1986), which consists of a thin-walled aluminum canister with a screen cover to expose 80 g of carbon to the test atmosphere. Although not as physically rugged as earlier models, properly packed this monitoring device was as successful in conducting the surveys through the mail.

The original plan called for a boy to give the oration, a common practice on festive occasions. After some deliberation, however, the occasion and the subject were declared unsuited to a young speaker. The oration was accordingly modified and entrusted to Otto Pack, chancellor of Duke George of Saxony, the host of the debate. At the last moment and when he had already memorized most of the speech, Pack developed a sore throat, so that the author... 

The summer of 1965 will see the beginning of the end, in 1966, of the air cooling for the museum. It has been extremely expensive and very trying and exhausting to move everything out of one room, pack the very holy objects, and months later to unpack them and put them where they were. It takes tremendous care and patience, and [George] Colman and now Everett [Boyce] have done a wonderful job, and i shall be always grateful.

George and Patel investigated some reversed-phase column packing materials for the presence of active silanol groups, by using the columns in the adsorption mode with -heptane as solvent. Four materials were tested for the analysis of theophylline and caffeine. These two compounds were well separated on all materials with the mobile phase acetonitrile - water - acetic acid (95 5 0.2). However, the sequence of caffeine and the internal standard 8-hydro-xypropyltheophylline varied for the columns.

Eva Peron was revered by the people of Argentina. Tragically, she developed uterine cancer, and her husband endeavored to keep the diagnosis a secret from her as well as from the people. Unaware of the gravity of the situation, Eva prepared for a hysterectomy. The operation was performed in a clandestine fashion by Dr. George T. Pack, an American, whom Juan Peron had flown to Argentina. Pack entered the operating room after Eva was sedated, and he left before she awoke. If a famous cancer specialist had openly been involved with the case, the secret would have been out. 

Some polar bonded-phase sorbents have also been explored for the HPLC separation of PAH. A silica-diamine packing was proposed as an alternative to the C.g-packing, using methylenechloride-hep-tane as the eluant (Chmielowiec and George (37)). The major advantages of this system would be a better ring size selectivity for alkylated PAH and the absence of water which eliminates splitting off for LC-MS analysis and hence increases sensitivity.
