Ozone ozonization

COBALT AND COBALT ALLOYS] (Vol 6) -reaction with ozone [OZONE] (Vol 17)... [Pg.987]

Turbidity. Turbidity in water is removed by ozonation (0.5—2 ppm) through a combination of chemical oxidation and charge neutralization. GoUoidal particles that cause turbidity are maintained in suspension by negatively charged particles which are neutralized by ozone. Ozone further alters the surface properties of coUoidal materials by oxidizing the organic materials that occur on the surface of the coUoidal spherical particles. [Pg.501]

Environmental Impact of Ambient Ozone. Ozone can be toxic to plants, animals, and fish. The lethal dose, LD q, for albino mice is 3.8 ppmv for a 4-h exposure (156) the 96-h LC q for striped bass, channel catfish, and rainbow trout is 80, 30, and 9.3 ppb, respectively. Small, natural, and anthropogenic atmospheric ozone concentrations can increase the weathering and aging of materials such as plastics, paint, textiles, and mbber. For example, mbber is degraded by reaction of ozone with carbon—carbon double bonds of the mbber polymer, requiring the addition of aromatic amines as ozone scavengers (see Antioxidants Antiozonants). An ozone decomposing polymer (noXon) has been developed that destroys ozone in air or water (157). [Pg.504]

Ozone. Ozone is an allotropic form of oxygen, O. Because it is an unstable gas, it must be generated at the point of use. Ozone is an effective, clean oxidizing agent possessing powerful antibacterial and antiviral properties. [Pg.272]

O-rings, especially Buna-N (Nitrile compound), should be stored away from fluorescent lighting and electric motors. These are sources of ozone. Ozone causes a general degradation of these elastomers. [Pg.209]

Depletion of siraiospherio ozone Ozone depletion projcoied lo result in 10,000 additional annual deaths not ranked liigher beoause of the unocrtainiics in future risk. [Pg.410]

Oxygen may exist as a molecule with two atoms, as 02, the gas we breathe, or as a molecule with three atoms, 03, a gas called ozone. Ozone has a sharp, unpleasant odor and very different chemical properties. [Pg.73]

The most widely used gas-phase chemiluminescence reagent is ozone. Analytically useful chemiluminescence signals are obtained in the reactions of ozone with NO, SO, and olefins such as ethylene and isoprene, but many other compounds also chemiluminesce with ozone. Ozone is conveniently generated online at mixing ratios of =1-5% by electrical discharge of air or 02 at atmospheric pressure [14]. [Pg.354]

Eye irritation and lacrimation are by far the most widespread and common symptoms clearly associated with increased photochemical-oxidant pollution. Although photochemical oxidant is customarily measured as ozone, ozone itself is not a primary eye irritant. Thus, the eye irritation associated with increased photochemical oxidants is probably due to some or many of the complex organic oxidants produced in photochemical smog. Richardson and Middleton, noted nearly 20 yr ago that eye irritation could be expected in a considerable portion of the population when the oxidant concentration reached 200 ng/m. ... [Pg.429]
