Oxygen reporting

Hydrogen and oxygen reported on the moist basis may or may not contain the hydrogen and oxygen of the associated moisture, and the analytical report should stipulate which is the case because of the variation in conversion factors (Table 1.3). These factors apply to calorific values as well as to proximate analysis (Table 1.4) and to ultimate analysis (Table 1.5).

An Enghshman, John Warltire, who had assisted Priestley in his work on the discovery of oxygen, reported an experiment He was trying to determine whether heat had weight or not In a closed bottle he mixed some common air and hydrogen and set fire to the mixture by an electric spark. An explosion took place and Warltire detected the formation of some dew on the bottle walls. As he was interested in the weights, he paid no attention to that. But Cavendish did. 

Oxygen, like nitrogen oxide, NO, shows little tendency to dimerise although the presence of the unstable, weakly bonded species, tetratomic oxygen O4, has been reported as a constituent of liquid oxygen. 

Natural titanium is reported to become very radioactive after bombardment with deuterons. The emitted radiations are mostly positrons and hard gamma rays. The metal is dimorphic. The hexagonal alpha form changes to the cubic beta form very slowly at about 88O0C. The metal combines with oxygen at red heat, and with chlorine at 550oC. 

Antioxidants have been shown to improve oxidative stabiHty substantially (36,37). The use of mbber-bound stabilizers to permit concentration of the additive in the mbber phase has been reported (38—40). The partitioning behavior of various conventional stabilizers between the mbber and thermoplastic phases in model ABS systems has been described and shown to correlate with solubiHty parameter values (41). Pigments can adversely affect oxidative stabiHty (32). Test methods for assessing thermal oxidative stabiHty include oxygen absorption (31,32,42), thermal analysis (43,44), oven aging (34,45,46), and chemiluminescence (47,48).

Fischer-Tropsch Process. The Hterature on the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide dates back to 1902 when the synthesis of methane from synthesis gas over a nickel catalyst was reported (17). In 1923, F. Fischer and H. Tropsch reported the formation of a mixture of organic compounds they called synthol by reaction of synthesis gas over alkalized iron turnings at 10—15 MPa (99—150 atm) and 400—450°C (18). This mixture contained mostly oxygenated compounds, but also contained a small amount of alkanes and alkenes. Further study of the reaction at 0.7 MPa (6.9 atm) revealed that low pressure favored olefinic and paraffinic hydrocarbons and minimized oxygenates, but at this pressure the reaction rate was very low. Because of their pioneering work on catalytic hydrocarbon synthesis, this class of reactions became known as the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis. 

In Group 15 (V), nitrogen compounds readily form molecular compounds with BF. Phosphoms compounds also form adducts with BF. Inorganic or organic compounds containing oxygen form many adducts with boron trifluoride, whereas sulfur and selenium have been reported to form only a few (41—43). 

Oxygen Difluoride as a Source of the OF Radical. The existence of the OF radical [12061 -70-0] was first reported in 1934 (27). This work was later refuted (28). The OF radical was produced by photolysis of OF2 in a nitrogen or argon matrix at 4 K. The existence of the OF species was deduced from a study of the kinetics of decomposition of OF2 and the kinetics of the photochemical reaction (25,26) ...
