Oxygen bond lengths

Carbon dioxide has a linear structure. The simple double-bonded formula, however, does not fully explain the structure since the measured carbon-oxygen bond lengths are equal but intermediate between those expected for a double and a triple bond. A more accurate representation is, therefore, obtained by considering carbon dioxide as a resonance hybrid of the three structures given below ... [Pg.181]

Likewise the experimentally measured pattern of carbon-oxygen bond lengths m acetic acid is different from that of acetate ion Acetic acid has a short C=0 and a long C—O distance In ammonium acetate though both carbon-oxygen distances are equal... [Pg.797]

In the acetate anion, the two oxygen atoms are equivalent, so we expect that the orbital descriptions about each O atom should be identical. You can verily that they are, and experiments further verily this the two carbon-oxygen bond lengths in acetate are identical. [Pg.710]

Conjugation of the 7t-electrons of the carbon-carbon double bond with the LUMO sulfur 3d-orbitals would be expected to stabilize the Hiickel 4n -I- 2 (n = 0) array of n-electrons in the thiirene dioxide system. No wonder, therefore, that the successful synthesis of the first member in this series (e.g. 19b) has initiated and stimulated several studies , the main objective of which was to determine whether or not thiirene dioxides should be considered to be aromatic (or pseudo-aromatic ) and/or to what extent conjugation effects, which require some sort of n-d bonding in the conjugatively unsaturated sulfones, are operative within these systems. The fact that the sulfur-oxygen bond lengths in thiirene dioxides were found to be similar to those of other 802-containing compounds, does not corroborate a Hiickel-type jr-delocalization... [Pg.389]

Figure 19. Variation in dimension of the X-fold cation site in alkali-feldspar for 2+ cations (), obtained by fitting the experimental data of Icenhower and London (1996) for Dca, >sr and Dsa at 0.2 GPa and 650-750°C. In performing the fits was set at 91 GPa for all runs. Error bars are 1 s.d. The positive slope is consistent with measured changes in metal-oxygen bond length from albite to orthoclase (cf Fig. 6). The solid line shows the best-fit linear regression given in Equation (35). Figure 19. The ground-state distortion (Table I) from the normal octahedral geometry, i.e., the displacement of the central metal atom by up to 0.34 A toward the oxo from the plane formed by the four cyano carbon atoms, is in further agreement with this reasoning, indicative of more reactive complex with an increased metal-oxygen bond length. [Pg.98]

Carbon dioxide or CO2. Carbon dioxide is a linear molecule, 0=C=0 with a mean carbon-oxygen bond length of 0.116 nm. See Carbon Dioxide... [Pg.534]

The oxidation of the simplest symmetrically substituted alkene, ethylene, is noteworthy in that an asymmetric spiro transition state is observed. When constrained to Cs symmetry with eqnal forming carbon-oxygen bond lengths, the energy increases by only 0.1 kcalmol. The spiro TS has the plane of the HO—ONO (or peracid) at right angles to the axis of the C=C bond. In an idealized spiro TS this angle is exactly 90°. While the formation of snlfoxides from snlhdes by peroxynitrons acid is well-established , epoxidations have not yet been observed in solution. [Pg.18]

The number of protons bonded to surface oxygens cannot be determined directly from EXAFS spectroscopy and must be inferred by some other means. One approach is to add protons at an —H distance needed to satisfy Pauling s bond strength sum to surface oxygens. Bond length and bond strength curves for —H bonds... [Pg.486]
