3,3-Oxybis ethers

The piincipal by-pioducts aie the result of direct chlorine addition to give 1,2-dichlotoptopane [78-87-5] and ether formation. The ether product is dichloropropyl ether [108-60-1] or 2,2 -oxybis(l-chloropropane). 

Although most of the macrocycles that contain phosphorus or arsenic which have thus far been prepared, are primarily transition metals binders, two compounds have been prepared which are essentially crown ethers containing phosphorus. Kudrya, Shtepanek and Kirsanovhave prepared two compounds which are essentially polyoxygen macrocycles but which contain one or two methylphosphonic acid esters as part of the ring. These two macrocycles are shown below as 7d and 17 and are both prepared by the reaction of 2,2 [oxybis(ethyleneoxy)] bisphenolate with methylphosphonic dichloride in a mixture of acetonitrile and benzene. The crystalline monomer 16) and dimer 17) were isolated in 17% and 11% yields respectively as indicated in Eq. (6.13). 

The phase behavior of several polybibenzoates with oxyalkylene spacers has been reported [11,14,15,20-27]. These spacers include the dimer of trimethylene glycol and different ethylene oxide oligomers. The most noticeable characteristic of these polybibenzoates with ether groups in the spacer is the considerable decrease of the rate of the mesophase-crystal transformation. The ligand, (5)-6,6 -[oxybis(ethylene)dioxy]biphenyl-2,2 -diol (1), is prepared in three steps from readily available 2,2, 6,6 -tetrahydroxybiphenyl (4). The steps involved are firstly asymmetric desymmetrization of secondly bridging of the 6,6 -position by diethylene ether, and finally selective deprotection of the propane diol to afford 1 (Figure 6.12). 

A 10 mL round-bottomed flask was charged with (5)-6,6 -[oxybis(ethylene) dioxy]biphenyl-2,2 -diol (1) (98% ee, 225.6 mg, 0.78 mmol), quinine (127.0 mg, 0.39 mmol) and ethanol (2mL). The mixture was warmed until the mixture suspension turned to a clear solution, and was allowed to settle for 12 h. The solid residue [crystals of (5)-l-quinine complex] was collected by filtration. To a mixture of aqueous 1 M HCl and ether was added the obtained crystals of (5 )-l-qumine complex. This was stirred for 15 min at room temperature, and the solution was extracted with ether (twice). The combined organic layers were washed with brine, and dried over sodium sulfate. After concentration in vacuo, the residue was purified by silica gel flash column chromatography (hexane/ethyl acetate = 20/1-3/1) to give optically pure (5)-l (167.8 mg, 74%, 99% ee) as a colourless solid.
