Specific examples in which results from ALCHEMI are compared with X-ray or neutron diffraction studies on the same sample have been presented for olivine [51], clinopyroxene [57] and feldspar [54] To date, all published planar ALCHEMI studies on mineral samples other than oxides containing high-Z elements (e.g. ceramic nuclear wasteforms, [58]) have been internally consistent and tractable. For example, a combined X-ray diffraction and ALCHEMI study on a complex, nonstoichiometric clinopyroxene [52] has been used to determine the location of vacancies in the structure. In... [Pg.52]

In a neutron diffraction study of the ethylene oxide clathrate deuterohy-drate 6(CH2)20-46D20, the hydrogen-bonded host framework is defined by three independent deuterated water oxygen atoms occupying special positions, as shown in the table below. The deuterium atoms are located precisely as... [Pg.361]

The structure of the internal acid site in ZSM-5 can be inferred from the similarity of infrared and NMR data to those of the acidic protons in zeolite HY, where neutron diffraction studies (ref. 21) have shown that the proton is located on an oxide ion bridging between silicon and aluminium ... [Pg.161]

The bulk structures of most minerals important to soil chemists are well known from x-ray and neutron diffraction studies. Exceptions to this generality would be the various amorphous oxides and mixed oxide precipitates. Methods pioneered by Catlow s group should find increasing applicability to the structural study of these amorphous soil minerals and mixed phases. Their approach has been to develop ionic-type force fields for performing static energy minimizations of general oxide and halide minerals. Since ionic force fields rei uire far fewer parameters than va-... [Pg.260]

It is reported [6] that active sites over oxides or mixed oxides for the dehydrogenation and hydrogenation reactions are generated, by co-ordination vacancies. In the case of spinel oxides, 110 and 111 planes are found to be exposed to the outer surface by differential neutron diffraction studies [7]. The active sites over these planes are formed by anionic vacancies due to the removal of oxygen atoms. These sites are shared between cuprous ions and another octahedral cation located in the plane or in the sublayer. These anionic vacancies are denoted as bimetallic vacancies (BMV). [Pg.1043]
