The a-oxidation of aldehydes was later further extended to the use of ketones as nucleophiles. In order to develop this reaction into a useful process, a considerable effort was made to optimize the reaction conditions as several different problems arose these included a lower reaction rate and yields because of the formation of the di-addition product at the two enolizable carbon atoms and lower 0/N-selectivity. The Wacker-Smidt process—hereafter known simply as the Wacker oxidation, reaction, or process—enjoyed considerable success, yet its use has declined dramatically over the past 10 years for at least two reasons.49 First, manufacturing plants are expensive to build and maintain because they must be constructed to withstand a corrosive environment. Second, another procedure that yields acetic acid directly from synthesis gas was developed and now supplants the Wacker-Smidt process. It lias been the purpose of the authors to consider the facts regarding both developed and undeveloped processes and to review these critically in so far as possible.
