Oxalic dihydrazide

Oxalic dihydrazide (1.18 g, 10.0 mmol) was added to di-2-pyridyl ketone (3.68 g, 20.0 mmol) in methanol (100mL), and then the mixture was refluxed for lOh. A pale yellow solid was obtained, which was filtered off, washed with methanol, and dried under vacuum (yield 3.38 g, 75%). Oxalic dihydrazide (m.p. 241-243.5 ) was purchased from Eastman Organic Chemicals and used as received. Other dihydrazides were prepared from dimethyl esters and hydrazine as illustrated below.

On the interaction of 1,3-diketones with dihydrazides of oxalic and malo-nic acids, the condensation products have been obtained in a molar ratio of 2 1 (88ZOR1823). In the solid state, they exist as the bispyrazolines 77 but in solution, equilibria are observed. These equilibria occur with the participation of the bispyrazoline tautomer, involving two diastereomers, and also of tautomers containing hydrazone and/or enhydrazine fragments.

An interesting diamine, bi-[5-(2-amino-l,3,4-thiadiazolyl)] (66), was prepared by Kabo and Ohta from oxalic acid dihydrazide (65). 

Method (6) has been used in the preparation of 2,2 -bis-l,3,4-thiadiazoline-5(4)-thione (114) from oxalic acid dihydrazide (112) via the dipotassium bisdithiocarboxylate (113). The dehydration-cyclization of 113 was performed with concentrated sulfuric acid.
